STORY
         in November on the night of the full moon, every part of Thailand comes to life. No,we're not talking about the famous full moon beach parties in the south. This is the night where Thai people celebrate one of the most beautiful festivals in Thailand - Loy Krathong.

         This festival of lights and water is remarkable as it is usually celebrate at night, where thousands of lights from the krathongs and the floating lanterns illuminate the rivers and the night sky.

THE ORIGIN OF LOY KRATHONG

          The festival is held on a full moon night in November of every year when the tide is at its hightest nad the weather is starting to cool down. Loy is a Thai word for to float while Krathong refers to a small decorated raft usually made of banana leaves and shoots.The Krathong plays an integral part in the festival as a form of offering to pay respect to the goddess of water. Some believe the festival of Loy Krathong has its origins from a Hindu tradition where devotees pay respect to the gods of the Ganges River, then later adopted by the believer of Brahma Buddhism

          The festival is said to have originated in the province of Sukhothai but since then it has evolved into different regional celebrations with their own takes ont festivities.

Today, Loy Krathong is regarded as a festival of new beginning. Couples float their rafts together in hopes of a brighter future in their relationship. Singles float theirs in hopes of finding new a rekindling lost love. it is also a festival of forgiveness where mistake and regrets are symbolically floated away with the raft.

THE CELEBRATION

Though the festival is called Loy Krathong, some part of Thailand celebrate the festival differently but all of them still maintain the same symbolic gesture of forgiveness and new beginnings.

Up north we have the Yee Peng Festival in the province of Chiang Mai. This spectacular Loy Krathong festival is observed by floating lit lanterns or Khoem Yee Peng into the night sky. This tradition was originally founded during the Ayuthaya era, then named "Loy Phraprateep" , where these lanterns were simbolically sent to the heavens to pay respect to the Lord of Buddha.

           In Isaan (Northeasthern), Loy Krathong is celebrated with a carriage of the boats. Usually held in Nakhonpranom, these boats are designed traditionally with banana leaves and decorated with various Thai flowers as well as candles and lanterns to illuminate the vessels. The Isaan people believe that by making the boat as a family, you will be blessed by the Lord of Buddha.

LOY KRATHONG IN BANGKOK

           Traditionally, Loy Krathong is usually celebrated by the river where families and friends gather by the nearest pier or river bank and float their krathongs together. In Bangkok, there are also a number of parks, ponds and pools where you can celebrate the festivities.

           For parks, Suan Lumphini on Rama IV Road has a large lake in the middle, which is perfect for big groups of friends and families. Another park worth checking out is the Benjakitti Park in Asoke. This park is vast and has a long lake right in the middle of it. At these parks you can even rent a boat and paddle out into the lake for a more intimate Loy Krathong moment.

           Most of Bangkok's major colleges are also open to public during the festivities. The most popular lake, where couples go to their romantic wishes granted, is at Chulalongkorn University on Praya Thai Road. The legend has it, that if you're sigle, you'll get together with the person you're floating the krathong with. However, floating as a couple here can cause the two of you to break up.

           Of course we cannot talk about Loy Krathong without mentioning the Chao Praya River. if you don't mind the crowd, there are a number of piers the are popular among the locals such as the Tha Pra Arthit Pier on Pra Arthit Road and by the Rama VIII bridge near Samsen Road. if you'd like a more sophisticated Loy Krathong experience, Bangkok's selection of premier riverside hotels sush as The Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok Mariott, and the Royal Orchid Sheraton are just a few of the prominent venues the not only offer special Loy Krathong dining promotions but also a cruise along the Chao Praya on their respective wooden ferries.


Loy Krathong Tips:
- Don't worry about not being able to buy a krathong. During the festival, there will be a lot of sidewalk stalls offering different designs and size of krathongs to suit your need.

- Bangkok's traffic is already bad on weekday, but during the festivals, it can get much worse.

To advoid the traffic, forget a taxi. The BTS Skytrain and the MRT Subway can take you to number of public parks sush as Chatuchak Park, Suan Lumphini Park, Benjakitti Park and Benjasiri Park, which are hotspots for Loy Krathong.

- On a krathong people usually put a candle, an incense stick, and a few coins into the krathong as an offering to the goddess of water. Don't alarmed if you see children in the water stealing money from your krathong. It is usually the best part about the festival for kids.

เกาะลันตา จังหวัดกระบี่ เป็นหมู่เกาะที่ประกอบไปด้วยอ่าวและหาดทรายที่สวยงามมากมาย หาดทรายน้ำใส ห้องพักราคาถูก เกาะลันตา มีศูนย์กลางอยู่บริเวณบ้านศาลาด่าน เกาะลันตาใหญ่ เนื่องจากเป็นท่าเทียบเรือ นักท่องเที่ยวส่วนมากนิยมเดินทางมาด้วยแพขนานยนต์และมาขึ้นที่ท่าเรือนี้ บริเวณนี้จะมีบริการสิ่งอำนวยความสะดวกต่างๆ เช่น ร้านอาหาร, ร้านขายของที่ระลึก, ที่พักหลายสไตล์, ร้านอินเทอร์เนต นอกจากมีอ่าวและหาดทรายที่สวยงามแล้วยังจะได้สัมผัสกับธรรมชาติแบบอื่นด้วย ที่ยังมีถ้ำสำหรับผู้ที่รักการผจญภัย ชอบการปีนป่ายและมีน้ำตกที่สวยงาม

สถานที่ท่องเที่ยว เกาะลันตาใหญ่ เป็นเกาะที่มีขนาดใหญ่ที่สุดใน อ. เกาะลันตา ตรงกลางของเกาะเป็นแนวเขายาวจรดใต้ หาดทรายด้านตะวันตกจะมีความสวยงามมากกว่า และเล่นน้ำได้ ขณะที่ด้านตะวันออกจะหันหน้าเข้าหาแผ่นดินไม่มีหาดทรายที่สวย แต่เป็นเส้นทางไปสู่หมู่บ้าน ชุมชนของชาวบ้าน และตัวอำเภอ ด้านตะวันตกหันหน้าสู่ทะเลอันดามัน หาดทรายสี่ขาวตลอดแนว น้ำทะเลใส บริเวณด้านตะวันตกนี้ไม่มีจุดดำน้ำ เหมาะสำหรับพักผ่อนเล่นน้ำ นอนอาบแดดบนชายหาด ตอนกลางของเกาะจะมีถ้ำ นักท่องเที่ยวนิยม เดินป่า นั่งช้าง เที่ยวถ้ำหรือเล่นน้ำตก ชึ่งจะได้บรรยากาศผจญภัยไปอีกแบบ

          เกาะลันตา เป็น เกาะงดงามทางฝั่งทะเลตะวันตกของจังหวัดกระบี่ ที่ยังคงความเงียบสงบไว้ได้มากกว่าเกาะอีกหลายๆแห่งของท้องทะเลกระบี่ ที่ซึ่งมีคนกล่าวขานว่า นี่คือ ไข่มุกเม็ดใหม่แห่งอันดามัน หมู่เกาะลันตาครอบคลุมและประกอบไปด้วยเกาะใหญ่น้อยจำนวนกว่า 50 เกาะ และมีการตั้งเป็นอุทยานทางทะเลแห่งชาติหมู่เกาะลันตา โดยสามารถจำแนกย่อยได้เป็นหมู่เกาะไหง, หมู่เกาะรอก, หมู่เกาะห้า และ หมู่เกาะลันตา

         เกาะลันตามีสภาพพื้นที่โดยทั่วไปเป็นภูเขาสูง ส่วนที่ราบจะอยู่บริเวณเชิงเขาและชายทะเล เกาะลันตา ประกอบไปด้วยหาดทรายจำนวน 10 หาด ซึ่งมีความสวยงามและมีความโดดเด่นแตกต่างกันไป อาทิ หาดคอกวาง หาดคลองดาว หาดลองบีช หรือ หาดพระแอะ เป็นต้น และหาดแหลมโตนด สถานที่ตั้งของประภาคาร สัญลักษณ์ประจำเกาะลันตา

การเดินทางไปยังเกาะลันตา

          มีให้เลือกหลายเส้นทาง ทั้งทางบก ทางเรือ ครั้งนี้ “ตะลอนเที่ยว” เลือกที่จะโดยสารทางเรือ โดยเริ่มต้นที่ “ท่าเรือเจ้าฟ้า “ภาย ในตัวเมืองกระบี่ ท่าเรือที่ตั้งอยู่ห่างจากเขาขนานน้ำไม่ไกลนัก

“ตะลอนเที่ยว” พร้อมด้วยผองเพื่อน ใช้เวลาแล่นเรือราวครึ่งชั่วโมง เรือก็พาถึง “เกาะ ไม้ไผ่” หรือ เกาะไผ่ เกาะที่ตั้งอยู่ห่างจากเกาะลันตาไม่ไกลนัก เราเลือกแวะพักรับไอทะเลที่เกาะแห่งนี้ก่อนเป็นการประเดิม เกาะไม้ไผ่ มีธรรมชาติที่เงียบสงบและคนไทยได้เปรียบชาติต่างชาติแน่นอน หากเดินทางมาที่นี่

เพราะด้วยความเป็นเกาะหนึ่งของอุทยานฯหาดนพรัตน์ธารา-หมู่เกาะพีพี จึงทำให้ยังไม่มีที่พักระเกะระกะ และค่าเหยียบแผ่นดินเพื่อไว้บำรุงจัดการการท่องเที่ยวเป็นค่าเข้าอุทยานฯ เพียงคนละ 20 บาท ต่างจากชาวต่างชาติที่ทางอุทยานฯเรียกเก็บถึงคนละ 400 บาท

หาดทรายที่เกาะไม้ไผ่นี้ขาวละเอียดเหมือนเนื้อแป้งดีๆนี้เอง ทำให้กิจกรรมที่ได้รับความนิยมของที่นี่คือ การอาบแดด เล่นน้ำทะเล และการดำน้ำดูปะการังทั้งแบบน้ำลึก และน้ำตื้น แนวปะการังซึ่งส่วนมากเป็นแนวปะการังเขากวางทอดยาวไปถึงทางทิศใต้ของเกาะ จนได้รับขนานนามว่าเป็น "ดงปะการังแสนไร่" ท่ามกลางทะเลอันดามัน

พายเรือ-ดำน้ำ

งานนี้ “ตะลอนเที่ยว”เลยไม่พลาด ที่จะ ลงดำน้ำตื้น ผุดดำว่ายใต้ผืนน้ำสีเขียวมรกต ดำดูสิ่งมีชีวิตใต้ทะเลอันดามันร่วมกับคนอื่นๆ หลังจากดำผุดดำว่ายกันจนหนำใจแล้ว ก็ขึ้นเรือมุ่งหน้าจากเกาะไม้ไผ่ แล่นเรืออีกราว 50 นาที เราก็มาถึงยังที่หมายคือ “เกาะลันตา” โดยขึ้นเรือกันที่ท่าศาลาด่าน

หลังจากขึ้นสู่ฝั่งที่เกาะลันตาแล้ว อันดับแรกที่พวกเราเลือกทำกันก็คือการเข้าที่พัก ที่ “คราวน์ ลันตา รีสอร์ท แอนด์ สปา” ที่ คราวน์ ลันตา เป็นที่พักซึ่งตั้งอยู่ในมุมสูงของเกาะลันตา ชัยภูมิของ คราวน์ ลันตา เปรียบเสมือนมงกุฏแห่งลันตาจริงๆ เพราะมีจุดชมวิวมองเห็นทิวทัศน์ของเกาะลันตาได้อย่างทั่วถึง เราปิดท้ายคืนแรกที่เกาะลันตากันด้วยการนั่งดื่มด่ำกับพระอาทิตย์ตกที่เกาะ ลันตายังจุดชมวิวของทางโรงแรม คราวน์ ลันตา นั่นเอง

หากชีวิตในเมืองกรุงจะดูแก่งแย่งรีบเร่ง มาที่เกาะลันตา ก็คือวิถีที่ตรงข้าม คงเพราะความสงบของธรรมชาติเลยทำให้ใจคนมาพักนิ่งสนิทตาม เราตื่นกันอย่างไม่รีบร้อน แต่เมื่อกินข้าวเช้าเสร็จก็ร้อนใจนิดๆ เพราะความที่อยากเที่ยวชมเกาะลันตาให้ได้มากที่สุด

แต่ก่อนจะพาเที่ยวขอเล่าถึงประวัติของเกาะลันตากันสักนิด เกาะลันตามีความสำคัญมาตั้งแต่อดีต คนเดินเรือมันใช้เป็นที่หลบมรสุม ก่อนสงครามโลกครั้งที่ 2 ชุมชนศาลาด่านได้กลายเป็นด่านภาษีของเรือเดินทางมาค้าขายที่เดินทางมาจาก ภูเก็ต ระนอง ซึ่งจะเดินทางผ่านไปยังปีนังและสิงคโปร์

คำว่า “ลันตา” มีข้อสันนิษฐานหลายข้อ บ้างก็บอกว่า “ลันตา” มาจากคำว่า “ลันตาส ลันตัส” เป็นภาษาชวา มลายู แปลว่าโรงร้าน โรงเรือน ซึ่งก็คือที่ตากปลาของชาวบ้านนั่นเอง บ้างว่า “ลันตา” มาจาก “ลานตา” แปลว่าหาดทรายที่เต็มไปด้วยเปลือกหอยลานตาไปทั่วหาดของเกาะ

หรืออีกทฤษฎี กล่าวว่า “ลันตา” มาจากคำว่า “ลุนตั๊ดซู” จากภาษาจีน ซึ่ง “ลุน หรือ หลุน” แปลว่า ภูเขา “ตั๊ด”แปลว่า ทางไกล และ “ซู” แปลว่า เกาะ ความหมายรวมคือ เกาะที่มีแนวภูเขาเป็นแนวยาวไกล และชาวเลเรียกว่า “ปูเลาซาตั๊ก” ซึ่งมีความหมายอันเดียวกัน

ความหมายสุดท้ายที่มีคนบอกไว้คือ “ลันตา” เพี้ยนมาจากคำว่า “ลอนตา” ในภาษามลายู ซึ่งแปลได้ว่า คนจนหรือคนที่ต่อสู้อย่างปากกัดตีนถีบ ซึ่งหมายถึงคนพื้นเมือง อันเดิมทีได้ร่อนแร่อยู่แถบนี้มานานนม ซึ่งกลุ่มคนร่อนแร่นี้ ถูกเรียกว่า “โอลังลอนตา” และหมู่เกาะที่มีคนเร่รอนกลุ่มนี้อยู่ จะถูกเรียกว่า “ปูเลาลันตา” ซึ่งอาศัยอยู่ใน 3 พื้นที่คือ หมู่เกาะสุรินทร์, พังงา, และหมู่เกาะลันตา

แต่ไม่ว่าจะมีที่มาอย่างไร ทุกวันนี้ก็หล่อหลอมเป็นชาวลันตาในปัจจุบัน อยู่กันอย่างกลมกลืน กลับเข้าเรื่องท่องเที่ยวของเรากันต่อดีกว่ามาเกาะทั้งที ก็ขอแวะไปหย่อนกายพักริมหาดกันหน่อย เราเลือกที่ “หาดคอกวาง” หาดที่มีหน้าหาดยาวเงียบสงบเป็นที่เดินเล่น

ก่อนจะไปเดินชม “เมืองเก่าเกาะลัน ตา” ซึ่งเป็นชุมชนบ้านชาวจีนโบราณ และสถาปัตยกรรมแบบเก่านับ 100 ปีที่ยังคงหลงเหลือ ตั้งอยู่ทางทิศใต้ของเกาะ ที่กิน ที่พัก ราคาถูกประเภทเกสเฮ้าส์ก็หาได้จากที่นี่แหละ ย่านนี้ยังเป็นที่ตั้งของ “ศาล เสด็จเตี่ย” หรือ พลเรือเอกพระเจ้าบรมวงศ์เธอกรมหลวงชุมพรเขตอุดมศักดิ์ ที่เคารพของชาวเกาะลันตาอีกด้วย

จากนั้นเที่ยว “หมู่บ้านทุ่งหยี เพ็ง” หมู่บ้านที่มีความสมบูรณ์ของพื้นที่ป่าโกงกางมากที่สุดในเกาะลันตา ตั้งอยู่ด้านทิศตะวันออกของเกาะลันตา นอกจากการพายคายัคเพื่อชมป่าโกงกางที่สมบูรณ์ที่สุดแล้ว การประกอบอาชีพของผู้คนในหมู่บ้านก็ยังน่าสนใจไม่น้อย เพราะที่นี่คือแหล่งทำกะปิอันลือลั่นทั้งสะอาดและอร่อย

ก่อนจะนั่งรถผ่านเขตความเจริญของเกาะ ไปพบกับอีกโลกหนึ่งของเกาะลันตา ที่บอกว่าผ่านเขตความเจริญนั้นก็เพราะว่า ถนนบนเกาะลันตายังคงเป็นดินลูกรัง ไม่ได้มีถนนลาดยางตัดผ่านทั่วทั้งเกาะ ความเจริญจึงแออัดอยู่เพียงแค่ส่วนหนึ่งของเกาะเท่านั้น ที่เหลือเรายังคงตามหาวิถีชีวิตดั้งเดิมของชาวลันตาได้

อย่างที่ “บ้านชาวเลสังกาอู้” หรือ ยิปซีทะเล หรือ ชาวไทยใหม่ ที่เรามาเป็นหมู่บ้านที่ตั้งอยู่ทางปลายเกาะทางด้านใต้ ห่างจากศาลาด่านไป 27 กิโลเมตร เป็นหมู่บ้านชาวเลที่มีขนาดใหญ่ ปลูกสร้างบ้านอยู่ติดทะเล มีวิถีชีวิตความเป็นอยู่ที่เรียบง่าย ผู้ชายมีอาชีพชาวประมงออกหาปลาส่วนผู้หญิงจะอยู่บ้าน ชาวเลที่นี่มีลักษณะเหมือนนิโกร ผมหยิกแบบซาไก ผิวดำ
ยามเย็นของเกาะลันตา

ความน่าสนใจนอกเหนือจากความเป็นชาวเลแล้ว ที่หมู่บ้านสังกาอู้ยังเป็จจุดหนึ่งของเกาะลันตา ที่โดนสึนามิพัดถล่ม แต่ชาวบ้านไหวตัวกันทัน จึงไม่ได้รับอันตรายถึงแก่ชีวิต แต่บ้านเรือนก็พังเสียหายไปมาก มีหลายหน่วยงานที่เข้าไปให้ความช่วยเหลือสร้างบ้านให้ใหม่บนฝั่งที่ไกลจาก ทะเลเล็กน้อย แต่ชาวเลส่วนใหญ่ก็เลือกที่จะขอสร้างบ้านเองอยู่ใกล้ๆทะเลดังเดิม ตะลอนเที่ยวกันอยู่ที่บ้านสังกาอู้จนใกล้ค่ำจึงล่ำลายามเย็นของลันตากันที่ นี่ ใต้ฟ้างามท้องทะเลสีครามนาม “เกาะลันตา” ไม่ทำให้ผิดหวังเลยจริงๆ

เทคนิคการจัดกระเป๋าเดินทางให้ประหยัดเนื้อที่

ขั้นแรก ควรจะลิซรายการของใช้ที่จำเป็น(จริงๆ) ออกมาเสียก่อนที่จะเริ่มจัดกระเป๋า ซึ่งต้องคำนึงถึงความจำเป็นในเรื่องของการเดินทาง และสถานที่ที่ไปด้วย เช่น ผ้าห่ม ถ้าเข้าป่าหน้าหนาว มันก็ออกจะจำเป็นอยู่หรอก แต่ถ้าต้องไปนอนโรงแรม 5 ดาวแล้วล่ะก็ ควรเก็บผ้าห่มผืนโปรดไว้ที่บ้านจะดีกว่า

ขั้นต่อมา ก่อนที่จะแพ็คของลงกระเป๋า ควรจะกำจัดกลิ่นอับของกระเป๋าเสียก่อน เพราะไม่อย่างนั้น เสื้อผ้าที่คุณขนไปอาจจะซึมซับกลิ่นอับเหล่านั้นได้ ควรนำไปตากแดดสักพัก หรือไม่ก็หาสเปรย์ป้องกันกลิ่นอับฉีดเพื่อเพิ่มความหอมก็ได้

เทคนิคการเลือกชุดสวยให้เหมาะกับเนื้อที่ของกระเป๋า งานนี้ถ้าเป็นการไปเที่ยวแบบเพื่อนฝูงที่ไม่มีพิธีการอะไรมาก กางเกงยีนส์ดูจะเป็นพระเอกของงาน เพราะตัวเดียวสามารถใส่ได้หลายวัน เข้ากับเสื้อยืด ในวันสบาย ๆ ได้ทุกสี แต่ไม่ใช่ว่าต้องไปลุยโคลน ลงน้ำนะ เพราะถ้าใส่ยีนส์ คุณอาจจะเน่าตั้งแต่วันแรกได้ แต่ถ้าเป็นงานที่ต้องพกชุดสวยไปด้วย อย่างงานกาลาดินเนอร์แล้วล่ะก็ ชุดแซกผ้าบาง กับรองเท้ารัดส้น ดูจะประหยัดเนื้อที่ได้มากที่สุด แถมสวยอีกต่างหาก ส่วนคุณผู้ชาย ถ้าจำเป็นต้องใส่สูท ก็ต้องถือแยกไปล่ะค่ะงานนี้ เพราะเป็นเรื่องที่ไม่ควรยัดลงกระเป่าอย่างยิ่ง

ในส่วนของการใส่เสื้อลงกระเป๋า ลองเปลี่ยนจากการพับ เป็นการม้วนให้เล็กที่สุดดูไหมคะ วิธีนี้จะช่วยประหยัดพื้นที่ และไม่ทำให้เสื้อผ้ายับยู่ยี่ด้วย

ส่วนสาวๆ ที่ต้องพึ่งครีมทำสวยวันนึงหลาย ๆ กระปุก และแต่ละกระปุกก็ใหญ่ ๆ ทั้งนั้น เรียกว่าขาดไม่ได้แล้วล่ะก็ ลองถ่ายครีมเหล่านั้นลงไปขวดไซส์เล็กที่เหมาะสำหรับการเดินทางดูไหมคะ ซึ่งขวดเหล่านั้น เดี๋ยวนี้ก็หาซื้อง่าย ตามห้างสรรพสินค้าทั่วไปมีทุกห้าง ไม่เชื่อไปหาดู หรือไม่ก็ซื้อแบบไซส์เล็กไว้พกพาเฉพาะการเดินทางออกต่างจังหวัดก็ได้

ที่ขาดไม่ได้ และสำคัญมาก ๆ ก็คงจะเป็นเรื่องของเอกสารสำคัญ เช่น หนังสือเดินทาง กระเป๋าสตางค์ ตั่วเครื่องบิน ฯลฯ ซึ่งเอกสารสำคัญเหล่านี้จะปลอดภัยที่สุด เมื่อมันอยู่ใกล้ตัวคุณมากที่สุด อีกอย่าง ถ้าเอาไว้ในกระเป๋าเดินทงแล้วล่ะก็ จะใช้แต่ละครั้ง ไม่ต้องรื้อของออกมาทั้งกระเป๋าเดินทางเลยหรือ เสียทั้งเวลาจัดใหม่ แถมยังพาลให้หงุดหงิดด้วย

This hotel is a work of art. When we heard the owner spent over 100 million euro to build it, we felt every penny was well spent! We stayed at the deluxe villa with a jacuzzi, which was spacious and luxurious (over 200 square meters of space), but watch out for the mosquitos at night. There was a DVD player in the room plus the hotel has a DVD library from which you can borrow films.

The feeling created is one of a traditional village, so you really feel you're at home. Every morning and night when we came back to our villa, a guard greeted us at the street corner. We especially loved having breakfast on the terrace looking out to the rice paddy fields, and although it's a bit pricey (20 euro as I recall) and not included in the rate, it's a must! The complimentary yoga and pilates classes made the stay more "healthy". We also recommend hiring the hotel limousine for airport pick up and drop-off service. For a mere 20 euro per trip, you feel like royalty. Since we stayed at the hotel during the soft opening, some of the facilities weren't yet ready (not a problem though---didn't miss out). We cannot wait to go back when everything is complete. And there were also 2 computers with Internet connection free of charge. We HIGHLY recommend this place. It's expensive but it's worth it. We loved it!
